The why
Pela Case. Leader and for the phone case category. Flaxstic composite is 10% flax shive (Saskatchewan agricultural byproduct from oilseed flax) plus a TerraTek Flex GDH-B1 plant-based biopolymer base; the finished case is 45% bio-based and 55% non-renewable. Meets ASTM D6400 and EN 13432 compostability standards in industrial composting facilities. The dermal chemistry profile is a meaningful differentiator: polycarbonate phone cases carry documented residual BPA migration via skin contact (NSF eyewear data, ~0.53 micrograms per day, below California MADL but above zero), and TPU petrochemical polymers can release brominated flame retardants via dermal contact when present (Bessa 2023 Environmental Science and Technology; sweat increases bioavailability). Pela's bio-polymer matrix carries neither BPA residual nor petrochemical flame retardants, removing those dermal exposure pathways from the 10 plus hour daily skin contact window. Materials disclosed as phthalate-free, BPA-free, cadmium-free, lead-free; PFAS not explicitly named in Pela's disclosure. Certified B Corporation per B Lab Global, Climate Neutral Certified, and 1% for the Planet member. The 55% non-renewable polymer matrix holds the score in the 2-3 band rather than the 1-2 tier reserved for single-ingredient or fully natural materials. Ingredients verified 05 2026.
